COMMERCIAL VAULT
by Adam King

Greetings, gamers. This month on the vault we had ads for two of Activision's top titles, which seem to fit the spirit of the summer.

Pitfall
While I don't have an ad for Jungle Hunt, which would go with this month's "Many Faces Of.." the next best thing is Pitfall, David Crane's famous jungle game for the Atari 2600 and Intellivision. Here we see a man trying to talk about Pitfall, the game everybody wants. So much, in fact, that every time he holds up a Pitfall box someone snatches it.

"This is--this is Pitfall the smash hit--the smash hit videogame by Activision that everybody wants for the Atari Video Computer System. With scorpions, tarpits, and rolling logs, with--unh unh--with underground passages and cobra rattlers, with--aah--with swamp, hungry crocodiles and lots more. Don't miss Pitfall, the smash hit every body wants. Get it before they're--all gone.
Pitfall, designed by David Crane. Don't--miss it."

There I was, hawking a game when suddenly...

 "HEY!!!"

"Get your own, you leech."

"Hopefully no one takes my box."

"Oh, well."

We had a box in this shot but you see what happened.

Chopper Command
We move from the steamy jungles of Pitfall to the scorching deserts of Chopper Command. This game borrows much from the classic title Defender. You control a chopper and have to shoot down jets and other choppers while protecting a convoy of trucks below. This ad features an army general who really gets into the game.

First we see him give orders to his troops, who appear to be stationed in a desert.

GENERAL: ABOUT FACE!
TROOPS: YES SIR!
GENERAL: Suck it in Shorty!
TROOPS: YES SIR!
GENERAL: WHAT'S THAT?
TROOPS: YES SIR!
GENERAL: DISMISSED!!

He then climb inside his tent and starts playing Chopper Command on his 2600(don't ask me how he powers it, its a TV thing).

ANNOUNCER: "If you've got the guts, we got the game. Chopper Command by Activision for the Atari Video Computer System"
GENERAL (as he plays the game): COMMENCE FIRING! GIVE IT TO HIM! HA HA HA! LOOK OUT! ATTACK! WATCH THE RADAR! RETREAT!! OOH!

Eventually the troops come into the tent. The General stands up and asks "YOU MEN GOT THE GUTS?" Once he gets a "YES SIR!" he tuck the game under his arms and walks off, simply saying," Then get your own game."
The announcer finishes: "Chopper Command by Activision."

PICTURES:

"I am your master! You will worship me."

"Anybody have a problem with me?"

How does our general unwind after a hard day at the office?

"I'll teach you sprites a lesson."

"I didn't see you defend the convoy."

Do you have the GUTS?

You know the routine: If there's a commercial you want to see, let me know and I'll see what I can do. Until next month, remember to ask yourself, "DO YOU HAVE THE GUTS?"
